‘With the right partnerships, Hull can thrive’ - Leader invites new prime minister to Hull
Hull City Council leader, Cllr Mike Ross, has written to incoming prime minister, Andy Burnham, to invite him to Hull.
Cllr Ross invited the prime minister to the city to witness for himself the incredible potential which Hull has and how by working in the right partnerships and with the correct support, it can continue to grow.
Driving economic growth and core funding for essential council services were also referred to by Cllr Ross, as well as highlighting recent successes with the council, such as its children’s services this year being graded ‘good’ by Ofsted, with elements of ‘outstanding’ practice.
The soon-to-be-opened Hull Maritime Museum, part of the £70m Hull Maritime programme, will add to both the economic and cultural offerings in the city and demonstrate why it was recognised as being one of the top 25 places to visit in the world in 2026 by National Geographic magazine.
Cllr Ross said: “Firstly, I would like to take this opportunity to congratulate Mr Burnham on becoming prime minister.
“From his time as a northern mayor, the prime minister is aware that Hull is a truly great city – a place with tremendous talent and a strong ambition to succeed.
“It is important he is aware of the economic challenges of places like Hull, particularly as a result of central government funding cuts. In Hull there is a positive story of how we have successfully tackled the major challenges of balancing budgets and maintaining essential services.
“With the right partnerships and with necessary support from government, Hull can thrive further, boost its economy even more and build on its offer.
“I am extending a warm welcome to Mr Burnham to visit Hull early in his tenure, to help to understand the city greater and learn as to why our city is one worth investing in and how it could become part of his new style government.”
